STUDENT PROJECTS AVAILABLE IN THE AUTZEN LAB
We are continously looking for highly motivated, and driven project students who are interested in characterizing eukaryotic membrane proteins involved in health and disease with biochemistry, structural biology and cellular techniques.
The projects can be tailored to your educational level or to a 3–6-month ERASMUS exchange.
MEMBRANE PROTEIN PROJECTS
Join the Autzen Lab to characterize a range of different membrane proteins involved in health and disease.
Pain, taste, homeostasis, pH regulation, and control of blood sugar levels, these are just some of the roles that membrane proteins that we work with are important for.
NATIVE NANODISC PROJECTS
Join the Autzen Lab to develop new tools for isolating membrane proteins in detergent-free systems.
Membrane proteins are vital for many cellular processes such as signaling and transport across the membrane, processes which are central for in e.g., taste, immunology, and neuronal signaling. In fact, more than half of drug targets are membrane proteins. However, purification and characterization of membrane proteins is a major research bottleneck, as it can be difficult to preserve their structural and functional integrity outside the membrane.
Techniques you will learn during A project
Depending on the project research theme, level and duration, you will learn:
Cell transfection and transduction with DNA or baculovirus particles, plasmid and primer design, DNA isolation, PCR, protein analysis (SDS-PAGE, Western blot), cell-surface ELISA, pharmacological analysis, bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) assays, Flow Induced Dispersion Analysis (FIDA), cell culture techniques, procedures for membrane protein purification, in vitro characterization such as activity assays, stability tests, ligand binding or complex formation, single particle EM (negative stain EM and/or cryo-EM).
You will also work on improving your skills in literature search, critical analysis, the scientific method, and how to communicate scientific results.
WHAT THE AUTZEN LAB OFFERS YOU
We offer you an opportunity for personal and professional development, in addition to an exciting and stimulating research project, set in an inclusive, creative, fun, and international environment. The lab provides you with access to a wide selection of state-of-the-art equipment for cellular, biochemical and biophysical protein characterization.
